Thousand Hills Trails

This is a 5 mile trail near Kirksville, MO. As the name implies, expect rolling hills and steep, rugged inclines in this patchwork of woodlands and grassy meadows. The hiking trail traverses both Big Creek Conservation Area and Thousand Hills State Park and passes through one of the few remaining bigtooth aspen stands in the state. The western portion of the trail follows the shoreline of Forest Lake and offers good opportunities for viewing waterfowl and other wildlife.

  1. Nice job and a great start on the a trails list! I’m always eager to hear of new places to explore. I have a few more Arkansas area falls that would be nice to add:

Richland Falls/Twin Falls in the Richland Creek Wilderness – -it’s not a maintained trail, but easy to follow

Indian Creek Trail — This is in the Buffalo River Area, and also not maintained but easy to follow

Hemmed in Hollow – from the Compton Trailhead (I note that you have the Centerpoint trailhead) — maintained –this is one of our favorites

Hawksbill Crag/Whitaker Point – also maintained and very popular

There are also some pretty small ones in the Buffalo River area that may or may not be worth adding: The Ponds Loop, Koen Interpretive Trail, Mill Creek Loop — but they may not be big enough hikes to add to this site.

Great additions! I have updated the Arkansas Trails with these. Mark ‘em up and let us know how to get there and what the highlights.

  2. When I get some time I’ll type up some stuff on them. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

    Also, there are:

    Hideout Hollow
    Cecil Cove Loop
McFarrin Point (again, not maintained, but very easy to follow).

We did all of these three last fall.

Also, how far North into Missouri are you looking to cover?

I can’t seem to update my avatar or upload any pictures as I always get a “file is to big”. Any suggestions?

I’m not sure what would be causing that. Sorry!

I’ve hiked some in Texas. Where can I find a link to tell you what I’ve done there. I don’t see one.

I should also say, after reading your “about” section, you seem very similar to me. I have friends who hunt, etc. I never really go into that and about 8 years ago really go into hiking and other outdoor adventures.

Give me some trail names and I will add them into the Texas section. Thanks for checking us out!
